When Ford unveiled the third generation F-150 Raptor, there was a mention of an upcoming R version with a V8. Up until very recently, that is pretty much what we knew about the Raptor R, but some information started to leak on the internet about three weeks ago stating the Raptor R will get the same engine as the GT500, which is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8.

The regular version of the F-150 Raptor is powered by a High-Output 3.5 liter Ecoboost V6 which makes 450 hp and 510 foot-pounds of torque. Trust me when I say it's plenty of power for a truck even this size. However, a lot of aftermarket companies and some well-known workshops started to build more powerful F-150 Raptors. I think Ford realized the Raptor was meant to have a V8 when some builders started to swap V8 in the second-gen Raptor charging a lot of money for it, and people would still pay.

Back to the Origins

At the very beginning, when Ford introduced the first-gen Raptor, the American truck was powered by a 5.4-liter V8. However, we know more about the optional 6.2-liter V8 found in the vast majority of Raptors. Back then, these were the performance engines Ford was working on, and then, the Ecoboost V6 took over. Don't get me wrong, the 3.5-liter twin-turbo is a phenomenal engine, but when it comes to a vehicle like the Raptor, we expect a V8. Even if people at Ford headquarter will never admit it, I think the event that really convinced them to offer a V8 for the third-gen Raptor was the RAM 1500 TRX. The Stellaris truck proved to be a major success, even with over 700 hp and the fuel efficiency of a Boeing 747.

Why the 5.2-liter

I think that if you are not able to answer this question at this point, you will never be able to. In my mind, it's clear that Ford wants to compete with the RAM TRX, and the 5.2-liter V8 is the only engine that can do it. The 6.2 and the 7.3 are good engines, but their specs are too different. The 5.2-liter V8 has been built to accommodate a supercharger with certain reliability, which is a key factor here.

Now, the only thing left to do for Ford is to unveil the final power of the Raptor R. Hopefully, the power will be over 700 hp since the GT500 is already making 760 hp out of the same engine.
